Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County have been consistently ranked as the #1 place to view fall foliage, and it does not disappoint! Fall generally is healthy mix of warm days and cool nights that gradually fades into cold temperatures and snow. Most boaters hang on through October, as there are still several days above 70 degrees and the water is still relatively warm from the summer sun.
Outdoor Activities:
Fall is the perfect weather for hiking and spending time outdoors. Cooler temps make for a more comfortable environment when doing an outdoor physical activity. The diverse terrain and several nearby state parks make for awesome hiking, with some spectacular views. Hike up to the Thayerville fire tower, located in Deep Creek Lake State Park, for a stunning view of Deep Creek Lake and the autumn leaves! Swallow Falls State Park is a beautiful site in the fall, and is also home to Maryland’s tallest free-falling waterfall! Garrett County is also home to the highest point in Maryland, with hiking trails leading up to the summit, Hoyes Crest. The cooler temps are also great biking conditions, whether it’s on the road or down the mountains! There are several locations set up specifically for mountain biking, like Fork Run Recreation Area. Check with the local parks to see what their trails allow.
Events:
The most popular event during the fall season is the annual Autumn Glory Festival! Ranked as the #1 Fall Festival in America by MSN, this is a can’t miss event. Spanning 5 days in October, this massive festival takes place all over the county. The highlights of the festival are the Fireman’s Parade and the Grand Feature Parade. Other events include various craft and artisan shows, pumpkin races at ASCI, and scenic driving tours! Another popular event is the Savageman Triathlon, which generally takes place towards the end of September. The Savageman course takes participants through the waters of Deep Creek Lake, across surrounding roads, and then down and up our mountainous terrain.
Indoor Activities:
If the autumn rains ruin your outdoor plans, you still have plenty of options to enjoy Deep Creek Lake and your vacation! Chilly days are perfectly spent over a warm cup of coffee at one of our unique coffee houses, like Traders Coffee and Canoe on the Run. The nearby arcades are perfect for spending an afternoon, no matter your age, and most are adjoined with a restaurant, making it easy to spend the whole day. While there aren’t any malls close by, there are several specialty stores in and around the lake. Downtown Oakland is also a hub for small local stores! Another fun way to pass a rainy evening is bowling at the local bowling alley.
